Shiitake spawn contains living Lentinula edodes mycelium on colonized hardwood dowels. This is a named species product, not a bag of untreated grain or a generic culture. Its role is to start mycelium in a larger receiving substrate.
Plug spawn is inserted into drilled holes in suitable sound hardwood logs, then sealed using the chosen log-cultivation method. Outdoor establishment is a long-term project, not a countertop kit.
Plan to use living spawn promptly. Final storage guidance and shelf life must come from the strain supplier; do not infer viability or purity from appearance alone.
