Colonised Shiitake Fruiting Block, 3.5 lb

$29.00

A fully colonised, rested Shiitake block with the slot already cut. Same biology as the kit, none of the packaging, at a lower price.

Description

You are buying the two months we spent on it. Colonisation is finished on a sawdust and soy hull formula and the surface has been allowed to brown and rest, so the block goes straight into your tent or monotub.

It ships without a decorative box, and that is where a good part of the price of a kit lives. Nothing else is different: same block weight, same flush behaviour, same grow card.

Soak for 12 to 24 hours after the first flush, drain, rest a week, then bring it back into humidity. Two or three more flushes is a normal outcome from a rested block, not a promise.

What is in the box

  • 1 colonised 3.5 lb block in a filter-patch bag
  • Fruiting slot already cut
  • Grow card

How to grow it

  1. Rinse the fruiting slot open if the surface has started to skin over.
  2. Stand the block in a tray or tent at the temperature on the label with indirect light.
  3. Hold humidity between 85 and 95% and mist the air, not the face of the block.
  4. Cut the cluster at the base, rest the block dry for five days, then soak it for 12 hours to retrigger pins.

Care on arrival

Blocks ship without decorative packaging, which is where much of the price of a kit goes. The growing result is the same; only the box is missing.

Questions

What conditions does Shiitake need in fruiting?

Fruit at 12-21 C with relative humidity of 85-92% relative humidity. Indirect light; dappled shade outdoors. Moderate fresh air exchange

How many flushes will a shiitake block give?

Most indoor growers see two to four usable flushes from a 5 lb block before the substrate collapses to sawdust. Soaking between flushes and resting the block cool and dry is what keeps the count up. It is not a guaranteed number.

What do I do the day it arrives?

Put it in its fruiting space at the temperature on the label and hold humidity up. The slot is cut and the block is colonised, so the only job is not letting it dry out.

Why is a block cheaper than a kit?

Because you are not paying for printed packaging. The block, weight and colonisation stage are the same as in a kit; the box is what costs money.

What does Shiitake taste like, and how do I cook it?

Deep umami, firmer texture, better when cooked. On this product we would harvest the first flush young.

Is this a good first grow?

Honestly, no. Shiitake wants a steady 12-21 C fruiting range and generous fresh air, and it shows its faults immediately. Start with Pink Oyster or Lion’s Mane, then come back to this when you have read your own room’s temperature swings.
