Bulk Rye Grain Spawn Bag, 5 lb

$34.00

The same culture in a filter bag rather than a jar, priced for growers filling a whole shelf at once.

SKU: MGS-SPN-BULK
Category:

Description

Select the species in the options. Five pounds of colonised rye will inoculate around eight 5 lb substrate bags, which is roughly a weekend of work and a month of shelf interest.

Bulk bags arrive fully colonised and need breaking up by hand before pitching. That is the trade for the better price per pound, and most growers prefer it once they have filled six bags.

Use within a week of delivery. A five pound bag that starts to sour in a warm kitchen is the most expensive beginner mistake on this site.

What is in the box

  • 1 colonised spawn container
  • Breathable filter cap or patched lid

How to grow it

  1. Warm the jar or bag to room temperature and shake it to break the grain loose.
  2. Work in still air: a closed room, no fan, everything wiped down with alcohol.
  3. Mix at roughly 5-10% spawn to wet substrate, more if you want speed over economy.
  4. Incubate in the dark at the species temperature. Use within two weeks of arrival.

Care on arrival

Do not leave spawn in a hot car or on a sunny sill; heat kills a culture faster than contamination does. White, fluffy and smelling sweet is what you want to see.

Questions

Will a jar of spawn grow mushrooms by itself?

No, and this is the most common ordering mistake on the internet. Spawn is culture: it has to be mixed into substrate, which is the food. Buy a substrate bag or a 40 lb bag of pellets alongside it.

How much spawn do I need?

Roughly 5-10% of the wet substrate weight. One 3 lb jar covers about four 5 lb bags; a 5 lb bulk bag covers around eight.

How does spawn travel, and how long does it keep?

Cold pack in an insulated mailer, dispatched Monday to Wednesday. Once it lands, use within fourteen days and keep it at 2-4 C until then. Spawn is a living culture in a bag of food, and it does not keep like a jar of paint.

Can I buy a species you do not list?

Sometimes. We keep cultures we can propagate cleanly and ship reliably, and we will say no rather than send you something weakened. Ask, and we will tell you honestly.

Is shipping included, and how do you handle live orders?

Flat rate, free over $95. Kits, blocks and spawn travel in insulated packaging with a cold pack and are dispatched Monday to Wednesday. Dry goods such as substrate, bags and hardware leave the same day if the order is in before 2pm.

Live goods are packed in an insulated mailer with a cold pack and dispatched Monday to Wednesday. Standard shipping is free over $95.
