Description
Rye is the standard grain for a reason: the berries stay separate after simmering, colonise evenly, and break apart in the jar without turning to mush. Twenty-five pounds makes around fifty 3 lb jars once you have hydrated, simmered and sterilised.
Soak for 12-24 hours, simmer 10-15 minutes until the skins are dry to the touch, jar it, and sterilise. If you have never done a jar, buy one of ours and copy the timeline off the grow card.
Store sealed in a cool larder. Weevils in an open grain sack are a far more likely problem than anything biological in a home grow room.
What is in the box
- Bulk dry substrate only. Bags, spawn and supplements are listed separately.
How to grow it
- Hydrate with hot water and drain back to field capacity: no free water from a squeezed handful.
- Pasteurise for oysters and Lion’s Mane, or sterilise under pressure for enriched sawdust mixes.
- Cool to room temperature, then mix in spawn at 5-10% of wet weight.
- Fill your filter-patch bags or monotub, and incubate in the dark.
Care on arrival
Store this bag sealed and dry. Substrate that has sat damp in a warm room will start to sour before you ever open it.

Questions
Can I use garden or potting compost instead?
No. Compost is too fine, too variable and usually carries nutrients that invite mould before the mycelium gets a foothold. Pasteurised straw, or hardwood pellet and supplement blends, are the two bases worth working with.
Do I have to pasteurise or sterilise?
Yes, before adding spawn. Pasteurising in hot water suits plain straw and unenriched pellets for oysters and Lion’s Mane. Anything with supplement mixed in wants a pressure sterilisation cycle instead.
Do you sell substrate already pasteurised?
Only in the ready-to-inoculate bags listed under grow bags. Everything on this page is dry and unprepared, because shipping water is expensive and pasteurised substrate travels badly.
How much does a 40 lb bag of pellets make?
Roughly ten 5 lb wet bags once hydrated and drained, which is the single biggest reason people stop buying substrate by the small bag.
Is shipping included, and how do you handle live orders?
Flat rate, free over $95. Kits, blocks and spawn travel in insulated packaging with a cold pack and are dispatched Monday to Wednesday. Dry goods such as substrate, bags and hardware leave the same day if the order is in before 2pm.
