How much bran is too much?

Above about 20% of dry weight you raise the nitrogen load enough that contamination loves the bag as much as the mushrooms do. 8-15% is the practical band for sawdust blocks.

Can I use the stuff from the supermarket?

Plain, unsweetened bran works, and the price per pound is rarely better than a grower’s bag. Do not use anything with added salt, milk powder or oils.

It arrived with a slight musty smell – is that normal?

Bran has an earthy, cereal smell. If it smells sharp, sour or fermented, do not use it: email us a photo and we will replace the bag.

How it works

1. Rehydrate to field capacity: damp and heavy, with a few drops escaping when you squeeze a handful hard, not a stream.
2. Pasteurise for straw and litter-based mixes (140-160°F for an hour or two) or sterilise supplemented sawdust blends at 15 PSI for 2-2.5 hours per 5 lb bag.
3. Cool before inoculating, then mix spawn through evenly and bag or bed immediately.

What to expect from this grow

Substrate quality is the variable most home growers skip. Wet it properly, drain it properly, and do not let a batch sit in a warm bucket overnight before you sterilise it.
