Quick answers on all in one grow bags

Open the pack only when the substrate or block is fully colonised; keep it out of direct sun; and change the air before you change the temperature – in that order, all in one grow bags behaves.

All-In-One Mushroom Grow Bags, Explained

An all-in-one grow bag is a sterilised, supplemented substrate sealed inside a filter-patch bag together with its own grain spawn. The spawn travels in a welded pocket at the top of the bag. You break the pocket with your hands, knead the grain through the substrate, and the bag becomes a complete grow: colonise it on a shelf, then cut the top open and fruit it. The sterilisation was done in a retort before sealing, so you need no pressure cooker, no jars and no flame work.

How it differs from every other thing we sell

  • Versus a ready-to-fruit kit: a kit is already colonised and about to pin, so you harvest in one to three weeks. An all-in-one bag asks you to do the colonisation, which takes two to three weeks first, and pays you back with more control and a lower price per pound
  • Versus a sterile substrate bag: that is substrate only, for growers who have their own spawn. Cheapest per bag, most work
  • Versus a colonised fruiting block: a finished block without packaging. Fast, but you cannot choose the species timing
  • Versus an empty filter-patch bag: empty plastic. You bring the substrate, the steriliser and the spawn

What a good result actually looks like

Break, knead, and by day three you should see white spreading from the grain. Day 10-18 the bag should be solid white (longer for shiitake and chestnut). Cut the top open, keep humidity near 90% and give fresh air two or three times a day. Pins follow in 3-8 days for oysters and lion’s mane. Expect one generous flush and a second smaller one. Nobody can honestly promise more than that from a 5 lb bag – including us.

The four ways these fail

  • Kneading in a draughty room, or with unwashed hands – the one step where contamination gets in
  • Storing the bag before you inoculate it: the substrate is sterilised, but time plus warmth is a mould head start
  • Cutting the bag open while the substrate is still browning and loose in the middle
  • Reusing the injection port for a second top-up inoculation
