All-In-One Mushroom Grow Bags, Spawn Sealed Inside

An all-in-one mushroom grow bag is substrate and spawn in one sealed package. The bag holds 5 lb of supplemented hardwood sawdust mix that was hydrated to field capacity and retort-sterilised, with a welded pocket of grain spawn along the top. Break the pocket, knead the grain through the block, and the bag becomes the whole grow: colonise it on a shelf, then cut it open and fruit it where you keep it. There is nothing to mix, nothing to pressure cook and nothing to inoculate in a still-air box.

This is the middle rung between a ready-to-fruit kit and empty filter-patch bags. You get the control of choosing a species and the patience of a colonisation period, without any lab work. Eight species are in stock, from blue oyster and pink oyster through king oyster, chestnut, shiitake, lion’s mane and reishi. Every bag is 5 lb, 11 × 7 × 3 inches, 6.2 lb shipped, with a self-healing injection port and a micropore filter patch.

How an All In One Mushroom Grow Bag Works

Wipe the bag down with 70% alcohol and work in a closed room - a bathroom with the fan off is plenty, and that is the entire sterility requirement, because the substrate was sterilised before the bag was sealed. Break the spawn pocket so grain falls into the substrate, knead it through evenly, then fold the top down over the patch and leave it at room temperature. Colonisation takes roughly 10 to 18 days at 68-75°F depending on species. When the block is white, move it to fruiting conditions and cut the bag open on the side away from the patch.

The injection port does a second job after inoculation: gas exchange without an open lid. That is why these bags can sit on a shelf in a living room where an open block could not. The micropore patch is the only filter; nothing else in the bag breathes.

  • Why 5 lb. A 5 lb wet block is the size that fruits a real first flush, fits two to four deep in a 66 quart tub, and is still carryable when soaked. Larger bags exist for growers filling racks; smaller ones suit grain work.
  • Why sterilised, not pasteurised. Supplemented sawdust with bran or soy hulls is too nutritious to pasteurise: competitor moulds win. A retort at 15 PSI kills the lot, which is why the bag arrives ready and why you do not need your own pressure cooker.
  • What it is not. It is not a kit: nothing is colonised yet, so the first flush is roughly three weeks away rather than one. It is not an empty bag either - you will never fill, seal or sterilise it.

Comparing All-In-One Mushroom Grow Bags by Species

Oysters are the fast, forgiving end: blue oyster and golden oyster colonise cleanly and fruit in cool rooms, pink oyster runs hot and fast and is the one to grow in a warm flat. King oyster and chestnut hold their texture for a week in the fridge, which makes them the grower’s choice when a flush needs to wait for you. Shiitake, lion’s mane and reishi are slower and more tolerant of being left alone, and reishi is grown for the conk rather than the pan.

The comparison worth making is between species bands rather than prices: the eight bags are $26.95 to $31.95 and differ mainly in temperature range, colonisation days and what the flush looks like. Each product page states all three, and the table under this one repeats them side by side so you can see the spread before you commit to a shelf.

All In One Mushroom Grow Bag Questions

Which One Fits Your Situation

  • You want volume without buying equipment. Two or three 5 lb all in one mushroom grow bags and a 66 quart tub: that is a shelf of flushes with no pressure cooker, no mixer and no grain work.
  • You already sterilise your own bags. Buy substrate and spawn instead. The all in one bag is priced for people who would rather not spend an afternoon at the stove.
  • You are testing a species before committing. Pick the slow species as a bag rather than a kit: shiitake, chestnut and lion’s mane all behave differently from the start, and you get to watch it.

All Eight All In One Mushroom Grow Bags

One size, eight species: every all in one mushroom grow bag here is 5 lb, 11 × 7 × 3 inches and 6.2 lb shipped, with a self-healing injection port and a welded spawn pocket. What changes is the culture inside and the conditions it wants.

What Goes Wrong, and What It Usually Means

Four things we get asked about on this shelf, with the answer that applies to most grows.

  • Grain is colonising but the substrate is not: The pocket was broken but not kneaded. Open the top carefully, mix the grain through the sawdust with a clean hand, refold and give it another week.
  • The bag swells like a balloon: Normal early colonisation, and not a fault: never open it to relieve the pressure. The patch is doing the exchanging; a swollen bag that smells sweet is fine.
  • Sour smell and no white run: Bacterial contamination from a warm room or wet mix. Bag it up and bin it; note the room temperature and the days since you broke the pocket so we can compare notes.
  • Pins form then stop or dry at the edges: Humidity collapsed when you cut the window. Cut it smaller, mist the walls of the tub rather than the pins, and keep the bag out of any draught.

What an Order From This Shelf Costs

Per bag the arithmetic is simple: $26.95 for a 5 lb bag that yields a first flush and usually one or two more, against an empty bag at $2.30 each once you own a pressure cooker and a scale.

What an All In One Mushroom Grow Bag Replaces

An all in one mushroom grow bag against a kit

A kit arrives colonised and fruits within a week or three; an all in one mushroom grow bag still has to run, roughly 10-18 days at 68-75°F, before you cut anything. You trade calendar time for money: about $26.95 for a 5 lb colonised block, against $34.95 for a 3.5 lb one.

Against filling your own empty bags

Filling mushroom grow bags yourself costs $2.30 a bag in film and needs a scale, a pressure vessel and a two-hour sterilise per 5 lb. The sealed all in one grow bag skips all three, which is the entire argument for buying it.

5 lb against the injection-port format

The bags here are 5 lb with a welded spawn pocket and a self-healing injection port, so gas moves without an open lid and you can top up with liquid culture later. A 10 lb bag colonises more slowly and needs 3-3.5 hours at 15 PSI if you were to sterilise one yourself.

From Sealed Bag to First Flush

  1. Wipe down and work in still air. A closed bathroom with the fan off, hands and bag wiped with 70% alcohol. That is the whole sterility requirement, because the substrate was sterilised before sealing.
  2. Break the spawn pocket. Squeeze along the top seam until the grain pocket opens and falls into the sawdust. You will hear it; do not tear the bag.
  3. Knead the grain through the bag. Turn the bag end over end and work the grain through the substrate until it is evenly streaked. Uneven kneading is the usual cause of a patchy run.
  4. Fold, label and leave it. Fold the top over the patch, write the date on the bag and keep it at 68-75°F out of the sun. Do not open it to check daily - the patch is breathing for you.
  5. Cut when the block is white. Once the substrate is fully colonised, move it to fruiting conditions and cut an X or a window on the side away from the patch.
  6. Mist, harvest, then rest. Mist the walls of the tub twice a day, cut the whole cluster while the margins are curled, then rest the all in one mushroom grow bag damp for a week before the next flush.

Terms on This Page, in Plain Words

Spawn pocket: A welded tube of grain spawn inside the top of an all in one mushroom grow bag, broken by hand so it mixes into the substrate.

Colonisation: The run of white mycelium through the bag. Ten to eighteen days for most of these species, longer in a cool room.

Retort sterilisation: Heat sterilisation under pressure - 15 PSI - done industrially before the bag is sealed, which is why no cooker is needed at home.

Self-healing injection port: A silicone spot you can push a needle through; the hole closes behind it. For liquid culture, not for beginners.

Micropore filter patch: The paper disc that lets gas pass and keeps spores out. Never tape over it with anything non-breathable.

Field capacity: The dampness a substrate should hold: a few drops under hard squeeze, no stream. It was set at the factory in an all in one grow bag.

All In One Mushroom Grow Bag Questions

Do I need a pressure cooker for an all-in-one mushroom grow bag?

No. The substrate was sterilised in a retort before the bag was sealed, and the spawn is already in the pocket. You break it, knead it and wait. A pressure cooker is only needed when you fill and sterilise empty bags yourself.

How long does an all-in-one grow bag take to fruit?

Plan on 10 to 18 days of colonisation at 68-75°F, then a few days after the cut for pins, so about three weeks from breaking the pocket to a first flush. Species and room temperature move both numbers.

Can I buy more than one bag and colonise them together?

Yes, and that is the normal way to fill a tub or a tent shelf. Bags stack on their sides; keep the patch ends clear and do not let them seal against each other.

The bag puffed up and the grain has not colonised. What happened?

Usually cold: a 60°F room stalls colonisation long before contamination does. Move it somewhere steadier at 68-75°F and wait. Green or pink patches that smell sour are contamination, and a bag that goes that way is a still-air problem rather than a bad batch - tell us and we will help work out why.

What do I do with the bag after the last flush?

Cut it open and break the spent block into a compost heap or a raised bed. It is mostly hardwood sawdust, bran and mycelium, so it keeps breaking down like any woody compost. The polypropylene film is rarely accepted in curbside recycling.

Is an all in one mushroom grow bag worth it over empty bags?

Per pound of colonised substrate, no - ten empty 5 lb bags are $22.95 and a pressure cooker does the sterilising. You are buying the sterilisation and the spawn: an all in one mushroom grow bag is $26.95 for a 5 lb block that is ready the day you break the pocket.

Do all in one mushroom grow bags need a fruiting chamber?

Not to start: cut the bag and hang it where the air is damp. A 66 quart tub or a shelf in a humidifier-fed tent makes the flush bigger and better shaped, which is where most kitchen grows improve.

Can I buy all in one mushroom grow bags in bulk?

Orders of eight or more are the point at which the $500 free-shipping line starts to matter; the cart shows it. Growers filling a rack usually move to substrate and spawn instead, and we will happily tell you which is the cheaper route for your numbers.
