How to use sterilised substrate bags ready to inoculate
Nothing about sterilised substrate bags ready to inoculate is difficult, and almost every failed grow we hear about breaks at one of four points: moisture, temperature swings, still air being taken for clean air, and opening things too early. These four steps cover sterilised substrate bags ready to inoculate in any shop-bought setup.
- Fill to no more than two thirds dry weight so the bag can be folded and banded without stretching the patch.
- Sterilise supplemented mixes at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours; pasteurise straw and Coir at 60-80 C for 1-2 hours instead.
- Cool to room temperature before you inoculate, then shake the spawn through the substrate at the rate the supplier lists for that species.
- Incubate sealed, then cut the panel and stand the bag where air moves; the patch is there to exchange gas, not to let mist in.
Storage and handling
Keep the pack sealed until you are ready to work, and write the delivery date on it – grain-based and live material are the two things nobody should use on memory.
Common questions
What is in the substrate?
Kiln-dried hardwood sawdust with wheat bran and soy hull supplements, hydrated to field capacity, then retort-sterilised in the bag. No lime-only mixes, no straw filler.
How soon should I inoculate after delivery?
Within a week or two, stored cool and unopened. The bags are sterilised, not irradiated: time and heat are what let mould beat you to a rich substrate.
Why buy these instead of the all-in-one bag?
Because you already have spawn, want a different species per bag, or prefer to inoculate heavily. If you do not have clean grain spawn, buy the all-in-one format instead.

Prepared supplemented hardwood substrate, sterilised and sealed in filter-patch bags – and nothing else. This is the tier for people who make their own grain spawn or buy it separately: you get the sterilised block, you bring the culture.
What is in the box
- Prepared, supplemented substrate, moistened to field capacity, bagged and heat-sterilised – then sealed with a filter patch
- No spawn included: this is the tier for growers who make or buy their own grain spawn
- Cool, then inoculate through the self-healing port at roughly 5-10% spawn by weight of wet substrate
- One 5 lb bag colonises in about two to three weeks and fruits like any sawdust block
How it works
- Let the bag cool to room temperature before you open your spawn – inoculating warm substrate cooks the grain.
- Work in still air, distribute the spawn through the substrate, and keep the patch facing up.
- Colonise in the dark at 70-75°F, then cut the bag open and fruit with high humidity and fresh air.
What to expect from this grow
Substrate is sterilised in a retort before sealing, which is a process, not a guarantee: check each bag when it arrives and before you inoculate. If a bag has lost its seal or smells sour, do not open it inside – email us with the order number and a photo.
