How to use masters mix mushroom substrate

Nothing about masters mix mushroom substrate is difficult, and almost every failed grow we hear about breaks at one of four points: moisture, temperature swings, still air being taken for clean air, and opening things too early. These four steps cover masters mix mushroom substrate in any shop-bought setup.

  1. Hydrate to field capacity: a handful squeezed hard should show moisture between the knuckles but not drip.
  2. Pasteurise straw and manure-free mixes at 60-80 C for 1-2 hours, or sterilise supplemented mixes at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours.
  3. Drain to the correct moisture before you inoculate – free water in the bottom of a bag is the classic contamination route.
  4. Inoculate while the substrate is still warm for grain spawn, or fully cool for liquid, and shake so spawn sits through the mass, not on top.

Storage and handling

Store cool and out of direct light. A hallway cupboard beats a greenhouse shelf for keeping a pack predictable between orders.

Common questions

Is this sterilised?

No – it is dry, kiln-dried sawdust and supplements. You sterilise it after hydrating and bagging, which is the correct order: dry mix keeps indefinitely, wet mix does not.

Do I need to add anything to it?

No. It is pre-blended and ready to hydrate. Some growers add a little gypsum for structure in very fine batches; it is optional.

What can I grow on it?

Lion’s mane, shiitake, chestnut, king oyster, reishi and golden oyster. For pink and blue oyster, pasteurised straw is cheaper and just as good.

Usually ordered with Chopped Wheat Straw Mushroom Substrate – 10 lb and Master’s Mix Prepared Mushroom Substrate – 40 lb Bulk Bag. The substrate archive covers mixes, hydration and the pasteurise-versus-sterilise decision. Mushroom Substrate. Reviews are not enabled on the shop, so the honest answers are in the FAQ above. For the technique side we keep FreshCap on substrates open while writing these pages, and the sanitation notes for the consumables follow the FDA Food Code.

The mix we use in our own blocks, sold dry so it does not arrive already colonised by something you did not order. One bag hydrates to roughly 22-24 lb of wet substrate, which fills four 5 lb bags or two of the 10 lb ones.

What is in the box

  • Kiln-dried, medium-hardwood sawdust blended with wheat bran and soy hull at roughly 80/10/10 – the standard supplemented mix for lion’s mane, shiitake, chestnut, reishi and king oyster
  • Dry and shelf-stable: store it closed, off a concrete floor, and out of the sun so it does not sour or take on mould before you use it
  • Sized for home growers – one 10 lb dry bag makes about four 5 lb hydrated filter bags
  • No spawn or bags included; this is the raw material tier

How it works

  1. Rehydrate to field capacity: damp and heavy, with a few drops escaping when you squeeze a handful hard, not a stream.
  2. Pasteurise for straw and litter-based mixes (140-160°F for an hour or two) or sterilise supplemented sawdust blends at 15 PSI for 2-2.5 hours per 5 lb bag.
  3. Cool before inoculating, then mix spawn through evenly and bag or bed immediately.

What to expect from this grow

Substrate quality is the variable most home growers skip. Wet it properly, drain it properly, and do not let a batch sit in a warm bucket overnight before you sterilise it.
