Description
Isopropyl Alcohol – One quart of 70% isopropyl alcohol with a screw-on trigger spray head, in a bottle you can refill at the pharmacy rather than buying mycology-branded alcohol at four times the price.
Isopropyl Alcohol: what you get
Isopropyl Alcohol arrives as 32oz, as the listing states it. Variations are sold as sealed or packed so it survives a courier, not just a shelf.

How to use isopropyl alcohol
Nothing about isopropyl alcohol is difficult, and almost every failed grow we hear about breaks at one of four points: moisture, temperature swings, still air being taken for clean air, and opening things too early. These four steps cover isopropyl alcohol in any shop-bought setup.
- Wipe the work surface and your hands, then let the alcohol flash off before anything sterile is opened.
- Work in still air: a fan or an open window carries spores into an open jar or bag.
- Keep consumables sealed with the patch or lid closed, and replace tape and patches rather than reusing them.
- Calibrate a hygrometer against a damp-salt test twice a season; flush counts are decided by the number you trust.
Storage and handling
Keep the pack sealed until you are ready to work, and write the delivery date on it – grain-based and live material are the two things nobody should use on memory.
Common questions
Is 70% really better than 91%?
For surface disinfection, yes – 91% evaporates too fast and coagulates the outside of a cell without killing it. Use 70% for the spray bottle; keep 91% for burning a loop if you do that.
Do you sell it because it is special?
No – buy it at any pharmacy or hardware store. We stock it because it is annoying to run out mid-inoculation, and a spray head fitting a quart bottle is a nuisance to find.
Can I use bleach or hydrogen peroxide instead?
Both have their place on surfaces, but neither is what you want on a substrate bag seam or a tool you are about to put into a block. Alcohol flashes off and leaves nothing in the substrate.
Usually ordered with Micropore Tape and Filter Patch Bundle and Nitrile Gloves for Mushroom Cultivation – 100 Count. The supplies archive lists the consumables with what each one is actually for. Mushroom Growing Supplies. For the technique side we keep the FDA Food Code open while writing these pages, and the sanitation notes for the consumables follow the FDA Food Code.
The one chemical in this shop that does three jobs: wipe down tools and bags, soak a scalpel between cuts, and knock back whatever is growing on your shelf edges. Get the concentration right and stop there.
What is in the box
- One quart of 70% isopropyl alcohol with a screw-on trigger spray head, in a bottle you can refill at the pharmacy rather than buying mycology-branded alcohol at four times the price
- 70%, not 91% – the water content is what lets it kill cell walls instead of just drying the surface
- Chosen because it earns its space on a grow shelf: nothing here is a novelty gadget
How it works
- Keep your fruiting space’s thermometer and hygrometer where the mushrooms are, not where the shelf air is.
- Sanitise tools before and after each grow; a spray bottle of 70% alcohol is a whole contamination strategy.
