How to use injection port grow bags

Nothing about injection port grow bags is difficult, and almost every failed grow we hear about breaks at one of four points: moisture, temperature swings, still air being taken for clean air, and opening things too early. These four steps cover injection port grow bags in any shop-bought setup.

  1. Fill to no more than two thirds dry weight so the bag can be folded and banded without stretching the patch.
  2. Sterilise supplemented mixes at 15 PSI for 2.5 hours; pasteurise straw and Coir at 60-80 C for 1-2 hours instead.
  3. Cool to room temperature before you inoculate, then shake the spawn through the substrate at the rate the supplier lists for that species.
  4. Incubate sealed, then cut the panel and stand the bag where air moves; the patch is there to exchange gas, not to let mist in.

Storage and handling

Store cool and out of direct light. A hallway cupboard beats a greenhouse shelf for keeping a pack predictable between orders.

Common questions

Can I use these for sawdust spawn instead of grain?

You can, but a port is built for flowing grain. With sawdust or plug spawn, open the top, mix and re-seal – the port then becomes a filter you did not need.

Does the port leak after inoculating?

Not normally. The needle hole closes as the silicone relaxes. Do not syringe through it or push anything solid through, and never reuse a port for a second inoculation.

What is the port size?

Standard 3/16-inch self-healing injection patch, compatible with a grain-spawn spoon or funnel tube through the same fitting.

Usually ordered with Empty Filter-Patch Grow Bags, 10 lb – 10 Pack and Empty Filter-Patch Grow Bags, 5 lb – 10 Pack. The empty-bag archive compares volume, film thickness and patch type side by side. For the technique side we keep FreshCap on filter-patch bags open while writing these pages, and the sanitation notes for the consumables follow the FDA Food Code.

The same bag with a self-healing silicone port welded into the corner, so you can pitch grain spawn in without ever opening the bag. Best suited to a shake-and-distribute colonisation, and the format most home growers end up wanting once they have filled a few plain bags.

What is in the box

  • Unfilled PP/PE grow bags with a heat-sealable top and a micropore filter patch plus self-healing injection port – nothing else. No substrate, no spawn, no colonisation
  • Rated for steam sterilisation in a pressure vessel at 15 PSI; they will also take boiling-water pasteurisation for straw-based mixes
  • 4 mil gauge film so the bag holds its shape when filled and handled wet
  • Flat-packed and clean, not sterile out of the box: you sterilise them after filling

How it works

  1. Weigh out and hydrate your own substrate mix, fill to the bag’s rated volume, then fold the top and seal.
  2. Sterilise or pasteurise the filled bag, let it cool completely, then inoculate through the patch or port.
  3. Colonise on a shelf in the dark, then cut the bag open to fruit.

What to expect from this grow

These are the bags for growers who already mix and sterilise their own substrate. Sold as a consumable: if a bag fails a seal or is damaged in transit, tell us and we will replace the pack.
